POSM – Tool To Increase Product Sales

POSM is an acronym used by Marketing and advertising professionals for Point of Sale Materials.

POSM is broadly used by brands to advertise and market their products. Product information is communicated to the customers thus attracting the attention of consumers. This in turn creates awareness and increases product sale.

Effective POSM Displays produce many advantages for manufacturers and retailers. They’ve been known to increase sales by up to 20% in stores, and they definitely can improve the popularity of a brand.

But before we understand the types of POSM, you need to know the associated acronyms – POS and POS.

Point of Purchase (POP) is all communication that is placed at the display area where the customers are deciding whether to buy the product or not. When brands place POSM in the stores at display area were the customers use to choose what they want to buy- it is the Point of Purchase. They influence the customer at the time of purchase.

Point of Sale (POS) is where the actual transaction takes place – The cash counter or exit area. The brand strategically places a few products at the cash counter which are also available in the display area or product section. But by placing it at the cash counter / exist area the brand are forcing customers to do an impulsive purchase.

Depending on the marketing strategy and products the brand uses POP and POS to influence customers and increase sale. Displays most relevant for the product and its target are used. A brand after studying the target customer decides on which point of sale material to use.

While both POP and POS will raise awareness of your brand, consider the following to define your strategy.

Use POP for :

  • Larger quantities of products.
  • Temporary sales or special promotions.
  • Pushing different packaging versions of the same product.

Use POS for :

  • Smaller products.
  • Single-packaged products.
  • Pushing different packaging versions of the same product.

The difference between POP and POS resides in the location and function of the displays inside a store. With the right assistance both options can be visually striking, becoming key components in your strategy to increase sales and brand awareness.

Types of POSM:

  • Posters – Brand posters are placed at display areas, aisles and other locations in store for better brand recognition, product communication, to influence the customers for a purchase.
  • Shelf Strips – Shelf trims are used to display brand information in innovative manners and helps Interaction with customers at point of purchase. This influences customers for purchase
  • Shop in Shop (SIS) – Highlights a display area or a shelf which helps to capture customer attention visually. Increases brand recall and increases purchase of highlighted products.
  • Aisle Breakers – helps to capture customer attention visually. Increases brand recall and increases purchase of highlighted products.
  • Headers – Lit and non-lit headers with brand information is placed above the display area. Increases brand recall and increases purchase of highlighted products.
  • End Caps units – Entire unit is stacked with products of one brand at a strategic location in the display area / product section.
  • Free Standing Units (FSU) and Island Units – Made of innovative designs to display products and placed high customer flow areas. This helps in attracting customers which ensures brand recognition and increases product sale.
  • Dump Bins – Placed in high customer flow areas with attractive offers / schemes which increases product sale.
  • Checkout Counters  – Placed at cash counters / exit area helps increase sale by encouraging impulsive buying.
  • Counter Tops – Small units placed on cash counters / exit areas helps increase sale by encouraging impulsive buying.
  • Parasite / MPD  – Small units placed at aisle, unit partitions, cash counters / exist areas helps increase sale by encouraging impulsive buying.

We can conclude that POSM is a great tool for brand marketing and advertising. With innovative and nicely placed POSM in a retail environment customers are encouraged to buy products and help brands to increase their sales. It increases brand value and recognition.
